Estimates of the life-shortening effect of RA vary; most sources cite a lifespan slackening of 5 to 10 years. The mechanism by that RA causes this increased risk remains unknown; the presence of chronic inflammation has been proposed as a contributing factor. The rate of RA is in the region of 3 cases per 10,000 population per annum.
